17 Birthday Freebies That No Longer Exist (or Quietly Got Worse)

Every birthday freebie list on the internet has the same problem: it tells you what a brand used to give away. You sign up, you wait, and on your birthday you get a 10%-off code instead of the free burger the article promised.

We track 800+ birthday offers and re-check them on a rolling schedule, so we see the downgrades as they happen. This is the other list - the offers that died, shrank, or got quietly rewritten, plus the ones that were already gone before we started tracking.

Last updated: August 2026

Downgraded, Not Deleted

These brands still have a birthday perk. It is just worse than the one you remember, and in a few cases it is no longer free at all.

Red Robin - the Birthday Burger is gone

The big one. Red Robin ended its recurring free Birthday Burger on June 1, 2026. Members whose birthdays fell through July 2026 were grandfathered into one final burger; after that the perk folded into Red Robin's variable "Surprise & Delight" offers. There is no guaranteed item anymore, and a minimum purchase may apply.

If you joined Red Robin Royalty for the burger, that reason no longer exists. Full details on our Red Robin page.

Dunkin' - free drink to 3X points

Dunkin' now gives Rewards members 3X points for one activated day (the day before, of, or after your birthday). That is not a freebie - it is a multiplier on a purchase you make. At 10 points per dollar and 150 points per redemption, a $5 birthday order gets you 150 points instead of 50. Useful, but you are buying the coffee. Dunkin' page.

Dairy Queen - the free Blizzard was never promised

DQ Rewards issues a "special birthday offer" in the app, and DQ does not publish what it is. Worse, you have to spend money to qualify: at least one $1+ order in the 45 days before your birthday. No qualifying order, no offer. Once issued you get 7 days. Dairy Queen page.

Jersey Mike's - points, with a loyalty test

Jersey Mike's drops 72 Shore Points on your birthday, enough for a free regular sub, bowl, or wrap - genuinely one of the better rewards left. The catch is eligibility: you must have made a qualifying purchase in the preceding 12 months and be opted in to email. Lapsed members get nothing. No drink included. Jersey Mike's page.

Noodles & Company - now sorted by tier

There is no longer one birthday reward for everybody. Classic members get a free dessert, Signature (1,601 points) gets a free small entrée, and Premier (6,601 points) gets a free regular entrée. If you signed up once and never went back, dessert is your ceiling. Noodles & Company page.

MAC Cosmetics - the gift is a spend tier now

The MAC Lover birthday gift is a Silver and Gold tier benefit. Bronze - the entry tier everyone lands in when they join - does not get one. Separately, in-store redemption is paused from August through October 2026 during a systems upgrade; online only in that window. MAC Cosmetics page.

Petco - free treat to 10% off

Petco used to hand out a free treat from the in-store Treat Bar on your pet's birthday. That is retired. The current benefit is a 10% off supplies promo code, valid 14 days, online only, with food and litter excluded. Petco page.

Victoria's Secret - the free-panty coupon era ended in 2016

The mailed "free panty" coupon was the birthday freebie for a generation of shoppers. Victoria's Secret killed it in November 2016, with L Brands executives telling investors that 40% of people who redeemed one bought nothing else and the constant coupons were eroding the brand. The birthday perk today is a $10 reward in your VS & PINK Rewards wallet. Victoria's Secret page.

Disney Parks - the free birthday admission is long gone

Disney ran free birthday park admission promotions years ago, and people still ask about it. There is no free ticket. What survives is the free Celebration Button from guest services - genuinely free, but you need park admission to get to a counter that hands them out. Disney Parks page.

Gone With the Brand

Sometimes the birthday freebie does not get cut. The company does.

  • Saks OFF 5TH - all stores permanently closed. Rewards members used to get a $5 to $25 birthday reward that loaded at the start of the birthday month. The program is dead and outstanding rewards cannot be redeemed. Details
  • Mr. Holmes Bakehouse - the SF cruffin bakery filed Chapter 7 and closed permanently in early 2024. Both the San Francisco and Los Angeles locations are shut. The app loyalty program went with them. Details
  • Sushirrito - the sushi-burrito chain that started in San Francisco shut down. The rewards-app birthday sushirrito, worth around $12 to $14, is gone. Details
  • Lyfe Kitchen - the health-focused fast-casual chain's unit count dwindled to nothing. The $10 birthday credit went with it. Details

We keep dead entries visible rather than deleting them, because "why didn't my Saks OFF 5TH birthday reward arrive" is a question people still search for.

Before Our Time: Birthday Clubs That Closed With the Chain

These four never made it into our catalog - the chains were already gone. They are worth listing because their birthday clubs were huge, and outdated freebie roundups still name them.

  • Payless ShoeSource - filed Chapter 11 in February 2019 and closed its last North American stores in June 2019, taking the Payless Rewards birthday offer with it. The name was relaunched later as an online storefront, and it runs no loyalty or birthday program today. What happened
  • Pier 1 Imports - filed Chapter 11 in February 2020, went to liquidation, and shuttered its remaining ~500 stores by October 2020. The name was later relaunched as an online-only retailer under different ownership. What happened
  • Justice - Ascena sold the brand to Bluestar Alliance out of bankruptcy and every Justice store closed by early 2021. The tween birthday coupon was tied to those stores. The name was relaunched online afterward, so check the current site before assuming any old reward carried over - it did not transfer automatically.
  • Zoes Kitchen - acquired by CAVA in 2018 and converted store by store. The last conversion opened October 20, 2023, retiring the Zoes brand entirely. Its birthday reward is now CAVA's. What happened

Reported Dead, Actually Still Alive

Half the "brand X ended its birthday freebie" posts you will find are wrong. As of our August 2026 checks, these are all still running:

  • Starbucks - free handcrafted drink or food item, any size, any customizations. Birthday on file 7 days ahead.
  • Baskin-Robbins - free regular scoop, no purchase required.
  • Krispy Kreme - free 3-pack of Original Glazed, no purchase required. Sign up 4 weeks before your birthday month.
  • Denny's - still a free birthday slam, though it is the Everyday Value Slam, not the full Grand Slam people remember. Dine-in required.

The lesson: verify before you believe, in both directions.

Why Birthday Freebies Get Cut

Four patterns explain almost every downgrade on this page.

  1. The freeloader math. Victoria's Secret said it out loud - 40% of coupon redeemers bought nothing else. A birthday offer only pays for itself if it brings a paying visit with it.
  2. The purchase gate. Rather than kill the offer, brands attach a condition: Dairy Queen's $1 order in 45 days, Jersey Mike's purchase in 12 months. The headline survives, the giveaway does not.
  3. Points instead of items. Dunkin' and Jersey Mike's both did this. Points are cheaper to fund, expire or gate more easily, and require a transaction to be worth anything.
  4. Tiering. Noodles & Company and MAC both moved the good reward behind a spend threshold, so the birthday perk rewards the customers who were already spending.

Read those four patterns and you can usually predict which offer is next.

How to Not Get Burned

  • Check the date on any list you read. If a roundup still promises a Red Robin Birthday Burger, it has not been touched since spring 2026.
  • Read the requirements, not the headline. "Free birthday reward" and "free birthday item" are different promises.
  • Watch for purchase gates before your birthday. Dairy Queen's 45-day window and Jersey Mike's 12-month window both have to be satisfied in advance. Discovering them on your birthday is too late.
  • Re-check your top offers each year. The programs that changed in 2026 changed quietly, by rewriting terms pages. Nobody sends an email announcing a downgrade.
  • Have replacements ready. Our complete birthday freebies list and 31 freebies worth $20+ are the fastest way to fill a gap.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Can I still get a free birthday burger at Red Robin? No. Red Robin ended the recurring Birthday Burger on June 1, 2026. Only members with birthdays through July 2026 received one final grandfathered burger. Royalty members now get a variable Surprise & Delight offer with no guaranteed item.

Does Dunkin' still give a free birthday drink? No. Dunkin' Rewards replaced the free birthday drink with 3X points for one activated day. You have to buy something for it to be worth anything.

Why did Victoria's Secret stop the free panty coupons? L Brands told investors in November 2016 that 40% of customers who redeemed one bought nothing else, and that the coupons made the brand look less exclusive. The birthday perk is now a $10 reward instead.

Do brands announce when they cut a birthday freebie? Almost never. Terms pages get rewritten and the offer stops appearing. Red Robin's grandfathering window was unusually transparent; most changes surface only when members notice nothing arrived.

Is it still worth signing up for a downgraded program? Depends on the offer. Jersey Mike's 72 Shore Points is still a free sub and worth having. A 10%-off code with exclusions is not worth an inbox slot. Our are birthday freebies worth it breakdown covers how to decide.

How do you know these are current? We re-check listings on a rolling schedule and stamp each one with the date and source it was last confirmed against. Everything on this page reflects checks through August 2026.
